Is there anyway that we can use homework in high school / college classes to make more free and open source software/get more young people involved?

The Free Doodle/WhenIsGood clone mentioned in DPic's idea is a perfect thing for a high schooler or college kid to make.

Or is that kind of creepy and weird?
