Raspberry Pi Projects 2024: Eight Fun Uses & Ideas
Ready to pull your Raspberry Pi out of the closet, dust it off, and dig into some Raspberry Pi projects for 2024?
We thought so.
That’s why we’ve compiled this list of eight fun Raspberry Pi projects!
Because let’s be honest: how many Raspberry Pis have been purchased over the years, with buyers planning all the amazing things they’ll build with their small but mighty processors?
A brief survey of my (home) office says at least one!
So, in my quest to answer the question, “What can you do with a Raspberry Pi?” I searched high and low to find the coolest, dreamiest, most fun Raspberry PI ideas for 2024.
These fun Raspberry Pi projects come with varying degrees of complexity. So whether you’re looking for a fun weekend or something a little more adventurous, we’ve got you covered.
Let’s go!
What can you do with a Raspberry Pi?
Music album art display

I recently moved house, and one of the things we treated ourselves to was a new Sonos system. And while we both share a love of hip hop, our music tastes diverge from there.
So when one of his Southern doom metal songs blasts on that I actually like, I want to take note. Who the hell is this band?! (Turns out Weedeater is a legit band and not the tool I use in my garden.)
To this end, this album art cover display would be the perfect addition to the new stereo. And as it’s pretty easy to execute, this Raspberry Pi project for 2024 could be the ideal jumping-off point!
Meeting notification

Home sweet home office, amiright?
Except everyone in your house has a hard time understanding what it means when you’re in a meeting. (No one’s perfect.)
So while it’s just me and my partner in our house, this fun Raspberry Pi idea could be super useful if you have kids and roommates lurking around the corner.
This one is linked up to Microsoft Outlook, but I guess the same end result can be achieved with a variety of scheduling tools – depending on your email provider.
Now I just need my dogs to learn to read!
Time lapse camera

I’ve always loved time-lapse photography and video. Maybe it’s the idea that I can speed up time or experience something in minutes that takes someone else hours to experience themselves.
And while my phone does have time-lapse capabilities, what am I supposed to scroll through while that video takes its sweet time?
This is one of those cool Raspberry Pi projects that solves all my problems. The Pi gets used, I get to take cool time-lapse pictures, and my Reddit account doesn’t get lonely.
AI air guitar

I won’t brag about my air guitar skills. (They’re basically non-existent.) But I always watch those air guitar competitions in awe, and they make me flip on The Ocho every single time.
So to prepare for the 2024 Air Guitar World Championships, AI air guitar is a fun Raspberry Pi idea that’ll help you hone your skills.
Set up your AI air guitar, throw away your nerves, and start shredding!
Mini Altoids tin gaming console

I’m one of those women with a purse that would make Mary Poppins blush. If I think I might need something and can find it in a small enough package, it’s going in.
For this reason, I LOVE miniature versions of everyday items.
Safe to say then that this next Raspberry Pi project for 2024 excites me a lot!
The mini gaming console is not only a tiny version of my favorite commuting pastime; using the Altoids tin makes me feel like it’s some special spy gear.
That’s a win-win in my book.
Hydroponic farm

Despite many failed harvest attempts, I fancy myself as a gardener.
And while I would love to justify a FarmBot, this vertical garden will have to be my stomping ground for the time being!
Hydroponics is the technique of growing plants using a water-based nutrient solution rather than soil, and hydroponic systems are used by small farmers, hobbyists, and commercial enterprises.
How does the Raspberry Pi fit into this? You can monitor water levels using a moisture sensor board. Connect this board to your Pi, and the sensor board can then connect to metal plates on a moisture probe.
Stick the probes into a pot, and you’re good to go (apparently!)
Magic mirror

For some reason, I’ve always wanted a magic mirror.
It was the first Raspberry Pi project I had in mind when I got a Pi, and it still remains high on my list of things to build.
I like the idea of starting my day without my phone, and this seems like a great way to get the day’s vitals without Twitter notifications about the latest disaster befalling the world!
Sign language tutor

Like most languages, American Sign Language has lots of nuances that can drastically change the meaning of a phrase. Unfortunately, none of the examples I can give are HR-approved, so you’ll have to use your imagination!
A sign language tutor teaches the basic ASL alphabet, but it could have endless applications if you develop more.
I imagine this would be one of those trickier Raspberry Pi projects to start with if you’re just a beginner, but it could be one to consider when you’ve got more advanced skills!
